Menhir Art Gallery is pleased to present Intermezzo, a solo exhibition by German artist Albert Hien, bringing together two bodies of work shaped by a continuous dialogue between colour, form, and light.
For over twenty years, Hien has worked with neon as a living material — a substance that breathes, vibrates, and reacts. His interest, initially technical, has gradually become a poetic reflection on the transformation of light into colour. The artist discovered that gas, naturally red in its original state, turns blue when it encounters electric current. From this metamorphosis arises his fascination: colour not as a given, but as an event — a phenomenon in constant flux.
The exhibition unfolds across two levels, like two movements of the same score.
On the lower floor, the works build a rhythm of forms and illuminations: luminous geometric structures, born from a repeated and varied module, draw within the space a balance between measure and freedom, between order and impulse. Here, light organises itself into thought, transforming the industrial element into a material of vision. On the upper floor, instead, colour becomes word, sensation. Hien investigates the distance between what we see and what we think we see, between language and its visual translation. Colours engage in dialogue — or conflict — with the signs that accompany them, evoking the subtle tension that permeates every aesthetic experience.
The title Intermezzo refers to this suspended condition: an in-between time, a moment of freedom within a broader path. Not a pause, but a point of balance between the logic of form and the unpredictability of light, where Hien’s research finds a new — luminous — intensity.
