Frank Louis
Biography

Frank Louis (born in 1966 in Hanover) is a German sculptor and ceramic artist whose practice combines formal precision with experimental freedom.

After studying product design and ceramics in Krefeld and fine arts at the Braunschweig University of Art, Louis developed a sculptural language that traverses diverse materials and techniques — from wood to latex, with ceramics as his medium of choice.

Since 2006, he has been Professor of Sculptural Concepts and Ceramics at the University of Art and Industrial Design in Linz, Austria, where he also served as vice-rector from 2017 to 2021. Influenced by Joseph Beuys’s expanded notion of art and by the Italian Arte Povera movement, Louis’s work explores the relationship between interior and exterior, and the ability of matter to embody both form and thought.

Often untitled, his sculptures invite open interpretation and direct engagement with materiality. Recipient of numerous international awards, including the Richard Bampi Prize (1996) and the Art Prize of the Gifhorn District (2000), he has exhibited in institutions and galleries such as the Hetjens Museum, the Baden Museum, and Galerie N in Nienburg. His ongoing research continues to push the boundaries of contemporary sculpture, establishing ceramics as a site of reflection and experimentation.
